Thanksgiving - the Practice of Gratitude

Thanksgiving is a great time to think about the people in your life and how you could express your gratitude for them in a meaningful way. More than simply an emotion, gratitude is an affirmation and acknowledgement of the good people and things in your life. It is this very understanding that allows us to feel joy and live a contented life.

Gratitude is a virtue you can cultivate, like any skill or practice. The key is your desire to make it a part of your daily life. You can begin with a few simple steps:

  • Pay attention to the things that you often take for granted and overlook. Think about how different your life would be if these people and things did not exist. Notice how they are connected to you or contribute to your world.

  • Acknowledge your experiences, the good and the bad. Although our tendency is to focus on the positive events and wipe our memories of the painful ones, even bad times can be instructive. By putting things into context and being honest about your thoughts and feelings, you will emerge with a healthier and more optimistic mindset.

  • Write in a journal. Jot down anything that you are grateful for and add them to your journal one by one. When you are having a bad day and thinking negatively, look back at your journal to remember the positive and get back on track.

And, last but not least:

  • Express Your Gratitude by reaching out to the individuals who’ve contributed to your life. Send them an email, write them a letter, say thank you in person, or show them your heartfelt appreciation with a meaningful gift.

The BEST gift to give yourself & your loved ones this Thanksgiving

Remember, the people and events in your life are themselves gifts. Acknowledge your blessings and you will likely find this Thanksgiving more fulfilling!
